There many advantages of having patio lighting from early evening through the night. Before you decide as to what kind of lighting you should install consider the following:
You certainly don’t want something that is so bright that light is reflected back into the house during your hours of sleep.
You want something that is not only pleasing to you and your family, but lights that your neighbors will appreciate. Most home owners prefer patio lights that produce a soft light, and add to the attractiveness of the house and surroundings.
Remember that safety must always be considered first.
There are a lot of options on the market for patio lighting. Solar powered lamps, bulbs with low wattage, and even brighter bulbs with shades are really popular today. The new energy saving spiral bulbs are great because they last a long time and use very little energy. The only problem that I have found with these is that they are not really an attractive addition to your patio. Another nice lighting system is to use an array of Christmas lights. They can be many colors or all clear and either color make a cool lighted yard. I have even used the twinkling variety, and children loved them, but some people may find this too distracting, so might consider using sparingly. Used in moderation, they can give you soft yet usable outdoor vision at night. They can also be relocated easily when more or less light is needed in certain areas. The small bulbs are economical and easily replaced when broken or burned out.
All things considered, designing your patio can be exciting and fun and lighting may be only part of it, but it is an important part. Take the time to consider the options when deciding on garden lighting issues and you will be amazed at the rewards it can bring. As a part of your home, the patio is a relaxing and enjoyable place to spend time and should be designed for that purpose.
