The Three Main Materials Used to Make Glider Benches

in Benches

The three main materials to make a glider bench are wood, metal and polyethylene plastic. Normally not all of them in one bench ;-) Generally speaking you can expect to find either metal and wood or plastic and metal combined or each material on its own. Lets have a look at the different materials a glider bench can be made of, so that you can choose which would be the best for you to buy:

Wood

Either made of only wood or mounted on a metal gliding base, wooden glider benches are great for moderate climates. If you live in a very hot and humid climate, you either have to choose very resilient wood or choose another material. It is always a good idea to treat wood against insects, fungi etc to ensure a long lifetime for your outdoor furniture.

Metal

Especially used for wrought iron glider benches these benches have a very elegant look and are extremely weather proof. If you live in a very humid climate, or somewhere where it rains frequently (England anybody?), you should check them regularly for rust. But well cared for, they can last several generations in every climate. There only disadvantage might be that the metal can heat up quickly in the sun.

Polyethylene Plastic

This special plastic gave the range of lifetime patio furniture its good name. It is very easy to care for and resists every climate imaginable. Ok, perhaps not extreme low temperatures in the arctic ;-) Another advantage they have is that they are lighter than other benches made from wood or metal, and can be easily moved around, as your exterior design fancy takes you!

Summary: Considering the right material for your climate and use is paramount when choosing a new glider bench. In the end, they last really long, so better choose wisely!
