Is there anything more “American” then the celebration of the 4th of July grill party for the family outdoors? It is always a great time and another opportunity which seemingly in today’s world with all its constant demands, for the family to come together and celebrate the joy of each other. In too many cases, it may be one of the shrinking number of times this happens over a year, and unquestionably it is the least harried. On other holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, usually by the time everyone actually comes together, the stress level necessary to meet all the demands of the season have left everyone so exhausted it is often anti-climactic. But this is not so on the 4th of July.
It is much more the case that everyone is extremely relaxed and at ease as they are basically just at the unofficial start of the summer season and all the joys it brings. So the thought of “kicking back” and just enjoying the great food such as barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, shrimp, corn-on-the-cob, veggies and the always new and experimental specialty creations is such an appealing one. Time to fire up the portable gas grill. Add to all this great food the ability to catch up on and enjoy the goings-on in the lives of those we love and care about, and it is easy to understand just what makes this event so special.
The 4th of July grill party for the family outdoors is truly a wonderful and relaxing experience and it should be. But it is also a rare opportunity for the adults to reflect on their joys and all the good things in their lives and also to be wise enough to pass on some information to the younger people present. Without going into extended detail, it is so important that the children begin to get an understanding that freedom isn’t entirely free, and that the privileges we enjoy should never be taken for granted. They were and still are paid for by the love, care and concern of so many other fellow inhabitants of our great country, past and present.
