An outdoor pond is an economical way to add value to your home. It turns a boring backyard into an virtual oasis.
First choose the type of pond you want, either water only or a koi pond. If you want the restful sound of water only, your pond can be small. If you prefer to have goldfish in your pond, plan on one about two feet deep. If you want a koi one, plan for a pond approximately three feet deep.
Next decide where you want your pond to be located in your yard. Don’t make the mistake of making the pond too small. Also, be sure your have access to electricity. An outdoor pond needs to be filtered, you will need electricity to operate the filter and possibly a fountain.
Avoid areas where trees will drop leaves and debris into the pond. You cannot, obviously, prevent all falling debris from an outdoor pond, but you should try to minimize the amount that will fall in.
When deciding on the shape of your outdoor pond choose a non-standard one. Lay out a rope in the shape you want the pond to be. Start digging leaving a ledge so you have the option of placing potted plants or foliage around it. Position your pond filters, and a pond fountain if you choose to add one. A fountain is a good idea to not only add beauty, but to aerate the water for healthy fish and plants.
Now it’s time to position the liner. It can be held in place by rocks or blocks. Fill slowly with water and allow the pond to sit for twenty-four hours before stocking with fish and plants. This allows the water to rid itself of chlorine, which will kill fish and plants if you add them too soon. Always consider adding Anacharis, since this plant eats the nutrients that can cause algae to overtake your pond. Water lilies are great plants for your pond. Co-op centers or garden stores usually stock these plants. Now all you have left to do is enjoy your outdoor space and your pond.
